We always hear about single parenthood from the perspective of the working mom, “trying to have to it all” “find balance” and all the rest. But what about the perspective of the child? A child who is never let out of sight of his mother?
Dylan is a precocious five-year old. One day his kindergarten teacher assigns the class to draw themselves helping out at home. She prompts the class with a list of possible chores. “Do you feed the dog? Do you make your bed?” We see Dylan’s perspective of life with a single harried, professional mother. At his house he has to do everything!
The illustrations depict the irony in his declarations as we see his exhausted mom juggling the demands of work and parenting.
